Holmes County, Ohio is the home of the largest Amish community in the world, which makes Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed and Breakfast the perfect place to spend your Amish Country vacation.

Whether your interest is taking a scenic drive on the many back roads, taking a tour to learn about Amish culture and customs with dinner in an Amish home, shopping for antiques in Millersburg, wine and cheese tasting tours, or hunting for handmade treasures, you are sure to find it in Amish Country. Ask your innkeepers to map out some of their favorite back roads Amish businesses including wood products, candles, baskets, and belts. There are many small towns within minutes of each other, and each has its own attractions. Below are just some of our favorites:

Berlin Area

• Behalt at the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center : Learn about the history of the Mennonites and Amish with this narrated tour of the 265' mural in the round. Video presentation and gift shop.
  
• Heini's Cheese: Free samples for more than 50 cheeses. Fudge, Amish foods, smoked meats, bulk foods and more.
• Wendell August Gift Shop and Forge: Watch the creators of the world's most unique hand-forged aluminum, bronze and pewter giftware at work. Make your own design in their workshop. Indulge yourself in the spectacular gift shop.
• Rolling Ridge Ranch: Featuring more than 500 animals and birds from around the world. Feed the animals from a guided, horse-drawn wagon. Petting zoo.
  

Charm

• Guggisberg Cheese: Home of the original Baby Swiss. Watch cheese being made. This cheese factory has won numerous awards for their famous swiss cheese!
• Miller's Bakery: #1 pick of the Innkeeper for baked goods. Fresh daily. Homemade breads, pies, noodles, doughnuts, cookies and fry pies.
• Chalet in the Valley Restaurant: Herb says that they could stay in business if their Smothered Chicken was the only item on the menu. Carol loves their Swiss-style cooking like their cheese fondue and schnitzel. Whether you choose Swiss or American menu items you are sure to have a great experience!
• Miller's Dry Goods: More than 8,000 bolts of fabric, sewing notions, quilts, wall hangings and more. Fabric outlet in basement.
• Miller's Quality Crafts: Old Order Amish family making furniture and crafts out of Pine. Great prices and a variety of finishes on items such as pie safes, jelly cupboards, corner shelves, wall hangings, kids furniture and more!
• Keim Lumber: Step aside Lowes, Home Depot and designer showrooms. This privately owned home improvement center has everything that you could possibly need including display kitchens and baths.

Dover

• Warther's Carvings: See the works of World Master Carver, Mooney Warther in this mesmerizing tour! Voted #1 area attraction by the Innkeepers.
• J. Reeves Victorian House & Museum: Home of Dover's first millionaire. Tour the home & carriage house including a WWII museum.

Walnut Creek

• Coblentz Chocolates: A chocolate lovers paradise. View chocolates being hand-dipped. Shop from pre-boxed selections or make up your own right in the store!
• Walnut Creek Cheese: Village of Shops including bulk foods, cheese, meats, deli, ice cream, fresh baked granola, jams & jellies, kitchen items and gift store. We buy many food items for our B&B breakfasts here.
• Yoder's Amish Home & Farm : Tour two homes, 100-acre farm, animal petting area, buggy rides, hayrides and crafts. The next best thing to taking a back roads tour of Amish Country. Seasonal.
• Carlisle House of Gifts: Carol's favorite gift shop in Amish Country. You'll find 3 stories of fine gifts, floral arrangements, Thomas Kincade, lace, lotions and soaps, Christmas decorations, and more!

Mt. Hope Village

• Homestead Furniture: Some of the finest furniture in our area. Select from the showroom or order custom-designed to your specifications.
• Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen: Delicious home-style meals and desserts. One of Herb & Carol's favorite places for Amish-style cooking!
• Ashery Country Store: From bulk foods to ice cream you'll find it all here.
• Swartzentruber Quilts: Home business. Hand quilted quilts, wall hangings, pillow covers. Other items include pot holders, hand braided rugs, aprons, etc.
• Stone Barn Furnishings More than just a furniture store. Be sure to check out their gift shop and garden items.

Kidron Area

• Lehman's Hardware: Founded in 1955 to serve the Amish and others without electricity. Thousand of old fashioned products: cast iron cookware, hand tools, oil lamps, kitchen gadgets, non-electric appliances, books, wood-burning stoves and more!
• P. Graham Dunn: See the beautiful wood wall hangings, pictures and gift items. Some are carved and some have laser imprints. See where the items are made and visit the 2nds room for bargains that you can finish on your own!

Sugarcreek Area

• Sugarcreek: Tour Little Switzerland of Ohio. Unique murals painted on many of the buildings with animated displays. Try Swiss foods and visit the gift shops.
• Breitenbach Wine Cellars: One of Ohio's premier wineries and the 2nd largest in the State. Sample award winning wines! Noted for Dandelion and Fruit Wines. Swiss and locally smoked meats. Annual Wine Festival the first weekend every May.
• The Winery at Perennial Vineyards: Was built in an old dairy barn. You will find some of the vines that grow grapes as you enter, see farm animals and can even stop and have a pizza or snack in the wine tasting room.
• Broad Run Cheese Factory. Tour the factory and learn about the cheese making process. They have been in business since 1933 and their specialty is Swiss cheese. Visit their gift shop and taste some wine while you are there too!

Millersburg Area

• Bowdens Bells: Bells, fountains, birdbaths, feeders and other unique garden folk art handcrafted from recycled materials. Original handcrafted jewelry. Nothing like you've ever seen before!
• Treaty Line Pottery: Functional and sculptural pottery by Carol Ohl. The stoneware and porcelain pieces are wood-fired in a Japanese-style Noboragama kiln. You're sure to find a treasure to take back home!
• Holmes County Pottery: Handmade pottery fired in Ohio's largest wood-burning kiln. Using traditional techniques, they offer a standard line of pots from functional to dinnerware to garden planters.
• Victorian House Museum: 28 antique-filled rooms of Victorian splendor in Millersburg. Listed in the National Registry of Historic Sites. Featured on HGTV. Open Sunday. This is Holmes County's 2nd most popular attraction.
• L & E Star Candles: Amish candle maker that specializes in carved, star-shaped candles. Watch her make her creations and buy some for gifts. Great prices on star candles, gel candles, poured candles, lighthouse candles and more!
• Holmes County Rails to Trails Hiking & Biking Path : Rails to Trails is part of a National program where old railroad tracks are being converted to hiking, biking, walking and bird watching paths. The Holmes County section is the only one in the USA where you can expect to pass Amish buggies! Our B&B can provide boarding for horses for guests who wish to bring their horses on the Trail.
• Amish Country Byway throughout Holmes County: The National Scenic Byways Program is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. The program is a grass-roots collaborative effort established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States. Holmes County is proud to say that we host the Amish Country Byway.

Wilmot Area

• The Wilderness Center: A must see for nature lovers! The Wilderness Center is dedicated to nature education, wildlife conservation, natural history research, and community service. The headquarters tract has grown to encompass 619 acres of forest, meadow, marsh, and restored prairie. In 1967 the Wilderness Lake was constructed to help attract waterfowl and other aquatic life. There is a nature center, hiking trails, picnic area and it is a great place for bird watchers! They also host workshops, classes, guided hikes, etc., on specific dates.
